The Basic Rule in Cornering is to Slow Down before doing it
Every corner has a speed limit depending on the size and road surface conditions. In a blind corner, it takes time to see obstacles or any changes in road conditions. Braking while cornering will make you lose balance and fall. Key here is to reduce speed before the corner; then turn with a margin of safety.
The same procedure must be followed when turning left or right in an intersection. Make it a habit to collect information while riding.
1. Assess information - corner size, road surface conditions [May change with the weather]; then decide on the speed of entry.
- Predict possible danger(s) in a blind corner such as sudden change of road conditions, parked vehicle etc.,
- Reduce speed to a safe level to eliminate risks.
* Always look ahead
* Keep arms relaxed while grip the handle gently
* Draw the chin in. Angle of the face must be vertical to the road surface.
2. Assume the correct form in preparation for the turn.
- Lean motorcycle according to speed.
- Focus on the corner's exit.
3. Focus on the exit of the corner. Always read information ahead.
- Pay attention to any changes in road conditions.
- Sudden acceleration and deceleration are dangerous while cornering as balance may be lost.
- Always "keep-right" in case an oncoming vehicle shoots-off the center-line.
4. Accelerate when the straight part of the road is visible.
Always keep the line of vision with the horizon; and look ahead.
Generally, the human eye can see 140degrees horizontal. Moreover, the zone of clear vision from the center is about 1.5degrees to the left and right.
While cornering, focus on the center of the corner's exit. It is important to always look ahead and collect as many information possible. Eye point must always be vertical to the road in order to avoid visual gap or distortion.
